Sitting for hours a day? You need critical illness insurance.

If you have to spend many hours sitting, you need critical illness insurance. It’s for real, no jokes. It is a well-known fact that prolonged passive sitting contributes to many serious diseases and shortens life expectancy. Numerous studies have stated that a sedentary lifestyle with little or no physical activity is worse that smoking.

“Screen time” is a modern term for the hours we spend looking at the screens of our computers, tablets, smartphones, and TVs. Excessive screen time is linked to negative health consequences

A person living a sedentary lifestyle is often sitting or lying down while engaged in an activity like reading, socializing, watching television, playing video games, or using a mobile phone/computer for much of the day. A sedentary lifestyle can potentially contribute to ill health and many preventable causes of death.

Sedentary living is a global problem that leads to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer among those who sit for most of the day. It may be deadly in the long run — even if you exercise daily.

In the article published in the “Annals of Internal Medicine”, Toronto researchers stated that prolonged sedentary behaviour was associated with a 15-20% higher risk of death from any cause; a 15-20% higher risk of heart disease, death from heart disease, cancer, death from cancer; and as much as a 90% increased risk of developing diabetes [1]. This analysis was based on pooled data from 41 international studies.

According to a report by The Conference Board of Canada – “Moving Ahead: The Economic Impact of Reducing Physical Inactivity and Sedentary Behaviour”, getting just 10% of Canadian adults to sit less and move more would reduce Canada’s health care costs by $2.6 billion and inject $7.5 billion into the Canadian economy by the year 2040 [2].

Alternative chairs – the active sitting chairs – are less dangerous to health. There are lots of offerings on the market that you can choose from. But anyway, buying a critical illness insurance policy is really crucial today.
